Prop 8 Trial

From this article: Tam is executive director of Traditional Family Coalition, a group of Bay Area Asian and Hispanic churches. He says his group is worried that legalizing same-sex marriage would open the door to all kinds of marriages.

"What about three people, why can't that be legalized. What about intergenerational marriages, why that cannot be legalized. Aren't they discriminating those then?" said Tam.

Um, intergenerational marriages? I thought that was legal... Now I'm just confused. But maybe that's the tactic. Confuse me enough that I just agree with him?

Just found...

This blog wrote about my friend. What makes me laugh is this:
I would put my next paycheck on the line (yes, I do work a 40-hour, 8-5 job) in betting that when you were in your 20's and you were talking to friends on the phone or watching TV, your parents -- or perhaps grandparents; I don't know how old your parents were when they sired you -- were thinking about how unnecessary it was and how in their day they had to listen to the radio and imagine the stories, and write a letter or go to the person's house in order to talk to them! Phones and televisions, what nonsense in the young people's lives.

He put his paycheck on something a little too quickly, I think, since the 'when [she was] in [her] 20's' is, um, now...

Music

Just listened to a couple of new albums, although I've been spending a lot of time lately revisiting old stuff. That's the problem with new music. There is so much of it, that it leaves little time to listen to really great stuff from years ago and still be up on all the new...

Well, here is a new and a new-to-me:

  • Alec Ounsworth - Mo Beauty: Lead singer of Clap Your Hands Say Yeah! goes solo. Nothing stands out as ridiculously amazing so far, but it's nice, and I'm a sucker for odd-sounding voices, which is why I like the CYHSY stuff in the first place.
  • The Submarines - Honeysuckle Weeks: This came out in 2008, but I just got it a few weeks ago. This is a husband/wife duo that writes pretty indie pop. Her voice has been compared to the lead singer of The Cardigans and to Lily Allen. I think I can hear some of that in certain songs. And of course there are the male/female harmonies that remind me of Mates of State, etc.

My Dream Man

Ok, maybe I don't want to marry him. But I do want to dance with him...

Smart/Stupid

Sometimes people say I'm smart. Sometimes I agree with them. Other times I buy all necessary ingredients to make great sandwiches, except bread. BREAD! Sandwiches...bread! I'm an idiot.

Best Tracks of 2009

I used to make 'Best of' lists for radio show playlists. My radio shows ended when I moved to LA last summer, but I couldn't keep myself from making a list this year. My lists are always in playlist form, and I burn CDs for family/friends who want them (if you want one, let me know). None of these are in any sort of order other than a slight attempt to have the songs flow together as much as they can. I also do not take 2 songs from the same artist/album, even though there might be a song or 2 I like better than others on the list. Fanfarlo's "I'm A Pilot" would have made the list if not for that rule. I did not take any song from February's Dark Was The Night compilation album. That album by itself could almost be a 'Best of' album, so it didn't seem fair to pull from it. If you haven't heard that album by now, you really should check it out. The entire album could possibly have made this list. Yeasayer's "Ambling Alp" was almost on this list, but it was just a single. The album comes out in February 2010. I decided to let it go in against the other 2010 releases instead, although I'm pretty sure you'll see it on my list this time next year.

So with that explanation, again, in no meaningful order:
1. Animal Collective - Lion in a Coma
2. Handsome Furs - Legal Tender
3. Passion Pit - Moth's Wings
4. Islands - No You Don't
5. Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros - Home
6. Fanfarlo - The Walls are Coming Down
7. Grizzly Bear - Two Weeks
8. Local Natives - Airplanes
9. Florence + The Machine - You've Got the Love
10. The xx - Crystalised
11. Andrew Bird - Not A Robot, But A Ghost
12. Sea Wolf - Wicked Blood
13. Bowerbirds - Northern Lights
14. The Antlers - Bear
15. The Dodos - Fables
16. Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Hysteric
17. Jenny Owen Youngs - What Beats Within
18. Regina Spektor - Eet
19. Imogen Heap - First Train Home
20. Great Northern - 33

Kelis

From the woman who taught us about milkshakes bringing boys to the yard, as well as owning her own bossyness (being the one we all love to hate), I'm honestly a little disappointed in Kelis's newest track Acapella.
